Business Export Meter Service

If you’re generating your own energy, there will likely be times when you’ll produce more energy than you need to power your business. Export meters can help you manage this and create extra revenue for your business.

What are export meters?

An export meter measures the amount of electricity your business sends back to the National Grid. If your site generates renewable energy—such as solar PV—any unused electricity can be exported and monetised.

Installing an export meter ensures accurate tracking of exported energy and enables your business to access export tariffs and revenue schemes.

Why Install an Export Meter?

The UK electricity network requires a constant balance between supply and demand. When businesses export surplus energy, it supports grid stability and contributes to the wider use of renewable generation.

Exported electricity is:

  • Measured via metering systems
  • Recorded over a billing period
  • Valued per kilowatt-hour (kWh)
  • Paid through a supplier or export agreement

While the process itself is straightforward, the way export is structured has a direct impact on the revenue achieved.

Why Export Value Varies

Businesses across the UK are increasingly installing export meters to:

  • Generate revenue from surplus electricity
  • Improve return on investment from solar panels
  • Reduce energy waste
  • Support sustainability and net zero goals

Without an export meter, excess electricity is often lost or unaccounted for.

How Much Can You Earn?

Export payments vary depending on your agreement and market rates. Many UK businesses earn between 3p and 15p per kWh, depending on supplier contracts and energy market conditions.

A tailored export agreement can help maximise your returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a smart meter the same as an export meter?

You can get smart export meters which mean they will send automatic reads to the supplier. You can also get NHH/HH export meters which will mean the exports will be monitored and you can get paid accordingly.

Do I need a smart meter to export electricity?

Most suppliers request a HH export meter so that they can see the usage every half hour. This is the most accurate one.

Where do I get an export MPAN?

When you get Solar installed your local DNO (distributor) will produce an export MPAN

How do I find my export MPAN number?

You will need to contact your solar installer or the local distributor.

Can I get paid for exporting electricity?

Given market conditions not all suppliers are offering this at the moment but there are a select few approved suppliers that we use that will pay you on your exported energy.

How many kw can I export?

This depends on the size of your panels and how much energy you use/generate. The bigger the panel size and area will mean more is generated. Some of which you will use, the excess you can export if it’s not stored elsewhere – i.e battery.

How much money can you make selling electricity back to the grid?

This fluctuates depending on market conditions but the suppliers we’re using at the moment are offering between 3 and 5 p/kwh.

Do I need an export meter for solar?

To monitor the exported energy from your solar panels or the excess energy generated that you do not use you will need an export facility. Sometimes we can connect remotely and sometimes we’ll need to physically change the meter
