The importance of sustainability management within business and going into the future.

Sustainability and sustainability management has become a critical issue for businesses in recent years as the world faces the challenges of climate change and resource depletion. The long-term success of a business is now intrinsically linked to its ability to operate in a sustainable way that minimises its impact on the environment, supports the well-being of society, and promotes responsible economic growth.

As such, it is essential for businesses to adopt sustainable practices and strategies that ensure they can continue to operate successfully in the future while also contributing to the sustainability of the planet. In this regard, sustainability has become a key driver of innovation, efficiency, and growth for businesses across all sectors.

As energy brokers, we at Flame Energy believe it is essential to focus on sustainability as the energy industry is one of the primary contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, but also has the resources and expertise to enable a successful transition to a sustainable future.

Sustainable green energy currently makes up around 30% of the UK total consumption with 79% of the public supporting the use of renewable energy for providing our electricity. The UK plans to reduce greenhouse emissions 80% by 2050 which is a huge task that can only become a reality if all businesses get on board.

What is sustainable business energy management?

Sustainability management is the process of managing energy use in a way that minimises the impact on the environment, promotes energy efficiency, and supports sustainable developments.

It involves implementing sustainable energy practices and strategies that prioritise the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and reduce the consumption of non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels.

Sustainability management within the energy sector also involves monitoring and analysing energy use data which is key to identifying areas for improvement and implementing new energy-saving measures where necessary.

We at Flame Energy understand that every business has different sustainability goals and different resources available, that’s why our experts work closely with you and your business to tailor our services around your goals and suggest achievable strategies to improve for sustainability.

What sustainable energy solutions are available?

Green Energy Contracts:

Green energy contracts are now available from most suppliers in the UK and are an accessible sustainable energy solution for all businesses.

Sustainable energy contracts can be structured in different ways, including physical and virtual PPAs (power purchase agreements) which involve either the delivery of renewable energy directly to the consumer’s location, or the purchase of renewable energy credits that offset your energy usage.

Different suppliers offer different forms of green energy contracts so make sure to get in touch with one of our experts who can guide you in the process to fit your business needs.

Green contracts are also a great way to invest in a renewable future as they provide a crucial stream of revenue for renewable energy providers that can be used to invest in further renewables growth.

Business Solar Power:

Solar power can be an excellent investment for all businesses as it is the most reliable renewable energy source and a great way to improve your businesses sustainability.

By utilising solar power, a typical business can be expected to reduce their CO2 emissions by over 22 tonnes of a year. This an excellent way for your business to reduce its scope two emissions and help you to achieve your businesses sustainability targets.

Batteries:

Batteries are a great way to utilise the full potential of renewable energy. Excess energy can be stored in batteries to use at night or during cloudy days as part of our transition away from fossil fuels as it provides more flexibility and security for your business.

As the UK strives to achieve net zero by 2050 batteries could play a huge role by making our grid system more efficient and crucially saving businesses money by ensuring the renewable energy they produce doesn’t go to waste.

An EV charging station for sustainable business management

Business EV charging Stations:

With the UKs current plan of banning the sale of diesel and petrol cars by 2030 and other countries planning to do the same by 2035, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is naturally going to increase even higher than current rates and this has been recognised by the UK government which has created new schemes to help businesses with this green transition.

Installing an EV charging point is easy to do with the help of our energy advisors at Flame Energy. You don’t need planning permission to install an EV charging point, so we’ll be able to work with our network of approved suppliers to get your charging point up and running as quickly as possible.

Why fossil fuels are bad:

The burning of fossil fuels releases harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, this in turn traps heat and causes global warming.

The release of vast amounts of CO2 has led to climate change, with significant impacts such as sea level rise, more frequent and severe weather events, and damage to ecosystems and biodiversity.

The IPCC warns that fossil fuel emissions must be halved within 11 years if global warming is to be limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

It can sometimes seem like a hard task to move your business to a more sustainable fuel, but Flame Energy are on hand to help, whether you want to turn away from fossil fuels and agree a sustainable green energy contract or install on site renewable energy sources, Flame Energy are here to help.

What have Flame Energy done to become more sustainable?

Reduced Travel:

Our monthly meetings with clients are now held virtually on our board-room screen to reduce the amount of travel we do.

Electric vehicles:

The release of vast amounts of CO2 has led to climate change, with significant impacts such as sea level rise, more frequent and severe weather events, and damage to ecosystems and biodiversity.

Office improvements:

Our office is powered by renewable energy. We’ve installed motion sensor lightbulbs and an intelligent heating system.

Carbon offsetting:

We now only produce a small amount of CO2. However, any we can’t eliminate, we offset with United Nations approved carbon credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I buy green energy for my business?

Many suppliers now have green and renewable energy contracts available for businesses.

We have access to hundreds of contracts and can provide you with green energy options along with a cost comparison against all renewable energy providers in the market.  Contact us to find the most suitable contract for your business.

Will it cost more to purchase green energy?

Until recently, renewable energy prices have been more expensive than energy from fossil fuels.  However, many are now cost-neutral or cheaper than fossil fuels, making renewable energy a great choice for businesses.  We can help you to source the most cost-effective tariff for renewable or green energy for your business.

What is a carbon neutral business?

A carbon neutral business is a business that reduces and offsets the carbon it uses.  To become carbon neutral, the first step is to assess the amount of carbon that your business generates – for example through travel, energy useage, and the efficiency of your building.  A specialist company can do this for you and advise you how much CO2 your business emits.  The next step is to reduce the amount of carbon you produce – for example, through changing to LED lighting, renewable energy contracts or solar panels. Any carbon you cannot reduce, can then be offset using carbon credits. Flame Energy can help your business become  carbon neutral through sourcing renewable energy contracts, installing solar panels and EV charging points, and providing LED lighting.

Is there a difference in the quality of LED lighting?

Just like many other products, there can be a vast difference in the quality of different LED lights.  Quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting.  We have partnered with the most reliable company in the UK with SMAS approved contractors, ISO14001:2004 and ISO9001 accredited factory with all LED tested to LM-70 and LM-80, along with qualified electricians and backed with a 5-year onsite warranty

Can you really save money installing LED lighting?

Absolutely, the savings for LED lighting have never been greater.  With the commodity costs rising and the availability and production of LED lighting, the savings are now greater than ever with some installations producing payback within the 1st year.

How do I switch suppliers to a green energy tariff?

Flame Energy will source the best renewable energy tariff for your business. Once a new energy contract has been signed, we’ll handle all the necessary details to switch your supply.
