RTS Meters Are Being Phased Out – Here’s What Businesses Need to Know
Published: 28/04/2025
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is officially coming to an end on 30th July 2025. If your business still uses an RTS meter, it’s time to start planning for an upgrade to avoid disruptions and unexpected energy costs.
What is an RTS Meter?
RTS meters – short for Radio Teleswitch Service meters – use a radio signal to control switching between peak and off-peak electricity rates. They’re commonly found in properties that rely on electric heating, particularly where gas isn’t available.
A typical RTS setup includes a black box near the meter labelled “Radio Teleswitch” or “Telemeter,” and it controls heating and hot water timings remotely.
Why Is the RTS Service Ending?
TThe infrastructure behind the Radio Teleswitch Service is being decommissioned, meaning these meters will stop functioning properly after 30th July 2025. Without an upgrade, businesses may lose the ability to:
- Accurately track energy usage
- Access off-peak electricity tariffs
- Automatically control heating and hot water systems
How Will This Affect Businesses?
If your business has an RTS meter, failing to upgrade it could lead to:
- Inaccurate energy bills due to disrupted metering
- Increased operational costs from loss of access to off-peak rates
- Manual intervention required to manage heating or hot water supply
These challenges can be avoided by acting early and replacing RTS meters with smart meters, which offer real-time data tracking, better tariff options, and improved energy efficiency insights.
Do You Have an RTS Meter?
Check if your site is affected by looking for:
- A “Radio Teleswitch” box near your electricity meter
- Electric or storage heating systems
- A property located in a non-gas area
If you’re unsure, Flame Energy can help you identify your meter type and arrange the appropriate upgrade.
Why Upgrade to a Smart Meter?
Smart meters are the natural replacement for RTS meters. They:
- Enable automatic readings and accurate billing
- Support a wider range of tariffs, including time-of-use options
- Help businesses manage energy consumption more effectively
