Tomato Energy Has Ceased Trading

Energy regulator Ofgem has confirmed that Tomato Energy has officially ceased trading, affecting around 8000 business customers across the UK. While customer energy supplies remain protected under the Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process, many businesses are now uncertain about what happens next and how to avoid being left on costly, temporary tariffs. At Flame Energy, we’re already supporting affected organisations to record accurate closing readings, secure competitive follow-on contracts, and ensure a smooth transition to a new supplier. Our goal is simple: to provide clear, practical guidance so your business stays protected, without disruption or unnecessary costs.

What Happened at Tomato Energy?

In April 2025, Ofgem restricted Tomato Energy from taking on new customers after the company failed to pay roughly £3 million in industry fees. This raised concerns about the supplier’s financial stability and its ability to meet regulatory obligations.

Despite efforts to recover, Tomato Energy was unable to continue trading and officially ceased operations on 5th November 2025.

Ofgem has stepped in to ensure customers remain supplied and has begun the process of appointing a Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) to take over affected accounts. This means that:

  • Customers should take and record meter readings to protect their final account balance.
  • Energy supplies will continue as normal, and there is no risk of disconnection.
  • Businesses should not switch suppliers until a new one has been appointed.
