This week marks Water Saving Week 2024, highlighting the benefits of people everywhere reducing the amount of water they use. Your water usage will depend on the nature of your business but cutting down on your water consumption, which can have a range of benefits. If you want to learn how you can improve your business water management, here’s our top tips for reducing your water usage.

Keep a close eye on your water consumption

If you don’t know how much water your business is using, it’s going to be hard to know whether the changes you’re making are actually making a difference. Using a smart meter for your water management is the first step in making a real change in reducing your business’ water consumption. If you can properly track your usage, you’ll be able to identify any patterns or areas for improvement as well as identifying any leaks as soon as they arise, preventing them from becoming a problem. Also, You could even attach AMR technology to your water meter so it will collect and report the data and send it to your supplier automatically.

Complete a water audit

The next step in reducing your consumption is completing a water audit for your business. Look at every piece of equipment your business has that will affect your water consumption. The older the equipment, the higher your water consumption is likely to be. Can you swap any equipment for a newer model or schedule in some maintenance? Check for any possible leaks as well to identify them before they become too big of a problem. This can all help to cut down on the amount of water your business is using.

Implement water-saving technology

There are lots of different types of technology and equipment available to help your business cut down on its water consumption. You could install motion sensor sinks on taps to ensure that they only go on when someone needs them, preventing them from accidentally being left on. Also in the bathroom, there are different water saving devices available for toilets. Installing one of these devices can help to cut down on the amount of water used each flush. In addition, you could also try using a device that collects rainwater from your roof. This can be used to water any plants you might have dotted around the office or a garden space, reducing the amount that you’re using from the taps.

Get your employees involved

It’s important that everyone in the business is on board with your water saving ambitions. If people are engaging with your goals to reduce water consumption, they will start using less water themselves. You could offer training for staff on any new water saving procedures with guidance on exactly what they need to be doing. Offering up information on the benefits of cutting down on your consumption for both the environment and the business is a great way to make sure you’re meeting your water saving ambitions.

Switch your water suppliers

April 2017 saw the deregulation of the water market, allowing businesses to choose their water supplier instead of being stuck with their regional supplier. This opens up the different options your business has for its water contract. Each will have their own benefits and different ideas for how your business can cut down on its consumption.
