Thanks to the rate at which the renewable energy industry is growing, export meters are becoming increasingly important. With an export meter, businesses generating electricity from solar, wind, biomass or CHP can send excess power to the grid, and get paid for it. In this article, we’ll share everything you’ll need for export meter installation.

Installing an export meter (generation meter)

If you’re generating renewable energy, there may be times when you’re producing more than your business needs.

An export meter will track the amount of energy exported back into the grid that you don’t use within your business. By measuring the precise amount of energy you export through a meter, this forms a basis for the tariff that is paid to you.

Can your business benefit from an export meter?

What return can I expect from selling back my excess energy?

The amount you get will vary depending on the type of contract you have and when you signed it, but current wholesale electricity rates would give you about 7p/kWh.

You may also get bonuses on top of this for having a REGO certificate. REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) certificates are issued to renewable energy generators to verify the amount of electricity they produce from renewable sources.

Suppliers often pay a premium for electricity that comes with REGOs because they can sell it as green energy to their customers, who are willing to pay more for sustainable energy options. Therefore, having REGO certificates can significantly boost your earnings from selling back your excess energy.

Selling power back under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Scheme

For smaller solar systems, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme can be a more beneficial option compared to traditional Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Both have their benefits and the best option may differ depending on your situation.

Flame will look into both on your behalf to ensure that you are getting the best deal for your export.
