Current Market Drivers:
🌱 The European Commission is targeting 100GW of annual renewable additions to cut EU gas demand by two-thirds by 2040, while faster electrification and 200GW of storage would further reduce fossil fuel reliance.
📉 European energy demand signals are weakening as economists cut 2026 euro area growth to 0.5% from 0.7%, with Iran war disruption weighing on activity. Possible ECB tightening and above-target inflation may further pressure industrial demand.
🚢 Egypt’s record 1.3mt LNG imports in June are diverting US cargoes from Europe while Qatari flows remain negligible. Strong Egyptian demand adds pressure to Europe’s refill season after Q2 storage injections fell 16%.
⚠️ Iran has threatened to block further export corridors used by the US and its allies after shutting the Strait of Hormuz and facing a renewed US naval blockade. The warning raises concern that disruption could spread beyond Hormuz to the Bab el-Mandeb gateway, where Iran aligned Houthi forces in Yemen have previously targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
🌡️ European power contracts remain supported as France’s third heatwave lifts demand and triggers fresh nuclear curbs, with cuts expected to peak near 5GW. Warmer river temperatures and elevated evening prices continue to keep the system under pressure.
